Things to Do with Leftover Pasta

Posted by Save Money Frugal Tips

Pasta is one of those things that most people make too much of. Once dinnertime is over and people realize their eyes were bigger than their stomachs, you’re left with a bunch of leftover pasta. Throwing it out would be one option, but that is basically the same as throwing a money. If you want to live a frugal lifestyle, you have to make use of every bit of leftover food that you have. The savings will add up over time.

One of the things to do with leftover pasta is simply save it for a meal the next day. It is very easy to throw the pasta and a little bit of water or sauce in a pot or bowl and heat it up again. In the microwave, this is even faster. (more…)

Ways to Save Money on Bananas

Posted by Save Money Frugal Tips

Bananas are usually one of the cheapest fruits you can find at the grocery store. They are also really yummy, highly nutritious, and able to be used in many different foods (raw, baking, etc.) Unfortunately, bananas also go bad sitting on the counter rather quickly. There are ways to help.

First, purchase bananas that still have a little hint of green to them. My kids actually prefer eating them this way, but they will ripen at home fast enough for those who prefer a banana that is all yellow. Put the banana bunch in a sealed plastic bag. Bananas produce some gas that actually hastens ripening. The bag will help the bananas stay fresh for up to two weeks.

After your bananas are past peak ripeness, there are so many things you can do with them. I bet most frugal and simple living folk know about making banana bread or banana nut muffins. Bananas can also be frozen and used in smoothies or in making fruity “ice cream.” They can even be used to thicken some soups!

One of the things to do with leftover pasta is simply save it for a meal the next day. It is very easy to throw the pasta and a little bit of water or sauce in a pot or bowl and heat it up again. In the microwave, this is even faster.

If you want to get fancy with your leftover pasta you can add it to other dishes. What you can use it for depends upon the amount you have left over. In fact, I often make extra pasta when I’m cooking it for dinner just so I can use it again in other meals. Cooked pasta will not go bad in the fridge very quickly. You can easily use it for 2 to 3 days after you initially cooked it as long as you allow it to dry out or get soggy.

Soup is one of the good meals to add leftover pasta to. Whether you make homemade soup with chopped vegetables and stock, or just opened a can and stick it in a microwave bowl, the addition of leftover pasta and turn it into more of a complete meal.

You can do the same thing with casseroles. Get out all your leftover vegetables, some meat or beans and the leftover pasta. Mix it up, pour it into a Pyrex dish, sprinkle on some cheese if desired and then bake it in the oven. You will have a delicious and very easy casserole to eat.
